The History of Thai Massage: 2,500 Years from Ancient India to UNESCO

The story of Thai massage begins in ancient India around 500 BCE with Jivaka Kumar Bhaccha, a legendary physician who served as the personal doctor of Siddhartha Gautama (the Buddha) and the Sangha (Buddhist monastic community). His healing methods combined herbal medicine, mineral treatments, and manual therapy techniques that would later evolve into Thai massage.

As Buddhism spread from India through Southeast Asia between the 2nd and 3rd centuries BCE, Buddhist monks carried medical knowledge along with religious teachings. Thai massage evolved as this Indian healing tradition merged with indigenous Thai practices, Chinese acupressure, and local herbal medicine.

The most significant moment in Thai massage history came in 1832 when King Rama III ordered the compilation of all Thai medical knowledge at Wat Pho temple. This included 60 stone inscriptions depicting the Sen energy lines and therapeutic massage points — the first formal codification of Thai massage knowledge.

In the 20th century, Thai massage gained international recognition. The Wat Pho Traditional Medical School was established in 1955, becoming the first institution to formally teach Thai massage to the public. In 2019, UNESCO's recognition cemented Thai massage's status as a world heritage healing art.
